Introduction
If you’ve ever thought about getting help with decluttering but weren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re not alone. Many of my clients come to me feeling unsure, a little overwhelmed, or even slightly anxious about letting someone into their home.
That’s exactly why I’m sharing this. I want to give you a clear, honest picture of how I work, so you can feel reassured, have your questions answered, and know there’s absolutely no judgement, just calm, practical support.
How the Decluttering Process Works
Most enquiries come via message or email. I’ll answer any questions and check that you’re within my working area.
From there, I usually suggest a 30-minute advisory call, ideally a video call. Meeting first often helps reduce any anxiety clients may feel before welcoming someone into their home.
During the call we:
- Discuss the area(s) you’d like help with
- Decide which space to tackle first (usually the one that will have the greatest impact)
- If you’re comfortable, you can show me the space so I can suggest a few quick decluttering wins straight away.
What Happens When I Arrive
When I arrive for a session, I’ll turn up with my large grey work bag, which contains:
- Labels and stationery
- Some basic tools
- Reusable bags for charity shop donations
- Bin liners for rubbish
- A drink, decaf teabags and lunch/snacks
I always change from my outdoor shoes into clean trainers that I only wear inside homes. This keeps your space clean, helps prevent me slipping on stairs, and keeps my feet warm (I’m a big fan of slippers at home).
If it’s our first session, I’ll ask you to sign a copy of my Terms & Conditions, although you will have already received an electronic copy beforehand.
Before we begin, we take as long as you need to talk through where to start and agree on a plan of action.
The ACE Decluttering Method
My approach follows the ACE Method, which keeps the process simple, practical, and manageable.
A – Assess the Area
First, we identify the area you’re struggling with and usually start with the space that will make the biggest difference.
I listen carefully as you explain:
- What isn’t working
- What the current challenges are
- What your ideal outcome would look like.
C – Clear the Clutter
Next, we roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Together we go through items and decide whether to:
- Keep
- Donate
- Sell
- Recycle
- Bin
Items you choose to keep are categorised into similar groups. This helps us see how much you actually own and whether further decluttering might help.
E – Enhance the Environment
Sometimes the issue isn’t just clutter, it’s also layout or storage.
If needed we may:
- Move furniture
- Adjust the layout of the room
- Reorganise where items are stored
- Introduce simple storage solutions
I always try to use the storage you already have first. If additional storage is needed, I can recommend practical options.
Most importantly, I organise items based on where you would naturally look for them, rather than assuming everyone thinks the same way.
How Long Does Decluttering Take?
This is a bit like asking, “How long is a piece of string?”
It depends on: the size of the room, how much is in it and how quickly decisions can be made.
We always work to your pace.
Some clients only need one or two sessions, while others prefer fortnightly or monthly support.
Sometimes we focus on one room, and in other cases we work through an entire home.
The service is completely adaptable to what you need.
Who I Work With
My clients often fall into one or more of these groups:
- Someone living alone or a single parent who just needs a helping hand and some accountability
- People experiencing mobility issues due to age or illness, who need practical physical help
- Busy families with working parents who feel overwhelmed by clutter and want calmer homes
- People recovering from trauma, such as the loss of a loved one
- Neurodivergent clients, including ADHD or autistic individuals who benefit from supportive decluttering systems
How Clients Describe Working With Me
What You Can Gain From Decluttering
The results of decluttering are often bigger than people expect.
You might:
- Find things you thought were lost
- Create more space in your home
- Finally feel on top of everyday life
But most importantly, you’ll leave with simple systems that make day-to-day life easier.
Clients often tell me they feel lighter, calmer, and clearer after a session, not just because the space looks better, but because their mind feels less cluttered too.
If you’ve been thinking about decluttering your home this spring, this could be the perfect time to start.
